Genres and communities of practice in online child abuse fora

This paper considers the theoretical background of genres, discourse communities and communities of practice, and asks how well these ideas apply to online abuse online abuse fora and the interactions that occur in these fora. Considering a series of examples, we conclude that they are indeed best understood as communities of practice capable of genereating community specific genres of interaction. The implications of this characterisation are considered, both in terms of simply documenting the nature of these online fora, but also in terms of potential investigative applications.
